Kawaii Halloween Costume Ideas That Are Not Actually Costumes

the best kawaii halloween costume ideas are the ones that are not really costumes: a spooky cute outfit built from a character beanie, a skeleton or ghost hoodie, and one small prop. you get a look that reads as halloween on the night and as normal clothes in november, which is the entire point.

hi. it's xoxi. i have opinions about halloween dressing and i'm going to drop them right now 🌸

why an outfit beats a costume

people spend a genuinely huge amount on halloween costumes, about 4.3 billion dollars a year in the US alone according to the national retail federation, and it is the single biggest category of halloween spending. most of that gets worn once and then lives in a cupboard forever.

a spooky cute outfit costs less, looks better in photos, and survives into the rest of your winter. you are not buying a costume, you are buying clothes that happen to be a bit haunted. i cannot stress enough how much better a deal this is.

also, and i say this gently: nobody has ever been cold in a beanie. everyone has been cold in a costume.

the formula, so you can stop scrolling

every kawaii halloween outfit on this page is the same three parts.

one spooky piece that carries the theme. a skeleton hoodie, a witch beanie, a ghost anything. this does the work.

normal clothes underneath. jeans, a skirt, whatever you already own. resist the urge to theme everything, because a fully themed outfit stops being cute and starts being a costume, which is what we are avoiding.

one prop or detail to make it read on purpose. a scrunchie, a patch, a bit of makeup. small.

that is it. three parts, one shop, no cupboard of regret.

the skeleton one

the easiest and the one people compliment most. the skelly albert hoodie is a frog showing off his bones with little hearts, which is somehow both spooky and extremely soft. wear it with black jeans and the skelly albert beanie and you are done in about four seconds.

if you want more menace, the albert and the flying skull hoodie is the darker version. same formula, sharper edge.

the witch one

this is mine and i will not pretend otherwise. the xoxi witch beanie is me in a witch hat surrounded by bats, twenty five pounds, and it does the entire theme from the neck up.

pair it with anything black and you read as a witch. add the vampire albert scrunchie in your hair if you want the outfit to have a second thought in it. no broom required, though i am not going to stop you.

if you want the wizard version instead, the wizard albert beanie is the enchanted one, and honestly the cosiest way to do magic.

the friendly ghost one

for the soft, slightly haunted people. the cute lunaboo ghost beanie is a little ghost with a bow, which is the least frightening halloween item ever made and exactly right if you want cute to win over spooky.

wear it with white or cream, add the cute skull albert beanie energy if you want to go bonier, and you have a whole look that is genuinely wearable in january.

the pumpkin one

if you want autumn more than horror. the pumpkin theo sweatshirt is a capybara being a pumpkin, and the pumpkin albert beanie is a frog inside one. this is the harvest festival end of the spectrum, zero fear, maximum cosy.

it is also the version you can wear to work on october 31st without anyone raising an eyebrow.

the pastel goth one (my favorite)

if you want the aesthetic rather than a character, this is the one. soft pastels with dark motifs, skulls and bats in lavender instead of black. i wrote a whole explainer on pastel goth if you want the proper definition.

for the outfit: my lavender axolotl beanie with something black, or the skull beanies with something soft. the trick is contrast. dark idea, soft colour.

one more thing before i go be spooky

buy the piece you would wear again. that is the whole test. if you look at it and think "this is only a halloween thing," put it back and pick the beanie instead.

if you want the gift version rather than the outfit version, the kawaii halloween gifts guide has the full spooky cute lineup, and albert did a frog specific one because of course he did.

i'm xoxi. soft on the outside, slightly haunted underneath. go be both 🌸
